Ode to sleep

Old man sleep, where did you go? You have left my boy floundering at night. Feel free to come back anytime!

Seriously. Kasper hasn't slept a decent stretch at night for a long time! It started when I went back to work last Monday. Maybe it's due to the growth spurt/Wonder Week that happens around week 19 - sometimes called the 4 month sleep regression. Maybe it's because I went back to work. Maybe it's from being overstimulated at day care. Maybe it's because he has his first "daycare cold". Whatever it is, it can stop now. We need more than 30 minute stretches of sleep at night. So does Kasper.

Life is sort of hard right now. Figuring out my new work/life balance. Feeling like I don't get enough time with my baby. Keeping the house clean enough that it can be shown with little notice. Worrying about selling the house. Etc, etc. I am looking forward to a little peace. Starting with a good night's sleep.

Week 18 - Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day to all the Mamas out there! Today is my first Mother's Day as a Mother and I am loving it! I love being Mama to Kasper every day.

So, I went back to work this week. As I said before, the anticipation of returning to work was a million times worse than actually going back. I have been enjoying work and starting new projects. Unfortunately I do have a little bit of Mom-brain so I am slightly dumber than when I left. When does your mind come back??

Kasper spent Monday - Wednesday with Rob. Rob came down with a cold on Monday that lasted all week so I don't think that he enjoyed the time as much as he would have healthy.

Here are some peeks of Rob and Kasper's time together:

On Thursday, Sandra came down to watch the boy. It sounds like they had a great time together! Friday, Steph watched Kasper in the morning and afternoon then my Mom came down to help. Rob and I got out for a sushi date night on Friday which was so nice! It was beautiful on Friday and we were able to sit out on the patio for dinner.

Even though I enjoy working during the day, I do miss my time with my boy. I try to get home around 4 to get a couple hours with him. I hope when he starts at daycare tomorrow he doesn't come home too exhausted and crabby. I'm sure he'll be a little overstimulated. In fact, I think even having me gone during the day has been messing with him a little. He hasn't been sleeping the best and wakes up 2-3 times a night instead of the 1 time he has been doing. Hopefully it's just an adjustment to the new schedule.

Chilling in the "tub." I think we might have to move him to the actual bath tub soon since he's getting too big for the sink!

One fun thing that happened this week was that Kasper really got ahold of his feet! He has trouble grabbing them with his big diaper on, but when the diaper is off, his hands are grabbing the toes.

He still can't get them into his mouth, but I don't think it'll take much longer.

We had a showing at 9 am yesterday, Saturday. We got the house all cleaned and headed to Jamba Juice for some oatmeal for breakfast. Kasper was such a good baby and made friends with everyone in the store. He is very social.

What you don't see is that I had pink and blue striped baby legs on him with this brown and red outfit. I put them on in the morning to be funny and by the time we had to rush out the door, I didn't have time to change them!

So we had the showing at 9 then had a party to go to at 10:30. We didn't get time to shower or change or make a pasta salad before 9 so we decided we would run home quick to do those things. We pulled up to the house a little after 10 and THERE WAS AN OPEN HOUSE AT OUR HOUSE! We knew there was going to be one but didn't know when it would be. We were shocked. Luckily no one was there at the time so we ran in, changed, and grabbed the salad ingredients. What luck.

The party was at the house of one of my Amma Mammas. Even though it was Mother's Day weekend, all 9 of us, with our husbands and babies made it! I hadn't seen many of the babies for a long time and they all looked so BIG! Like real babies! Everyone brought delicious foods and we met the Dads and mingled. It was a lot of fun and a beautiful day. We wanted to get a picture of all the babies since we were all there. Up until this point, Kasper was ready to party. He was in such a good mood and smiling. I laid him down on the blanket for the picture...

Yep. He did the silent red faced cry as soon as I laid him down. Nice. Then for the rest of the pictures, he flailed around and hit his friends while he sobbed.

After the photo incident, Kasper was done and we left to head up to St. Cloud.

It was such a beautiful day yesterday! It was awesome to be able to sit outside and enjoy the sun. After a couple naps, Kasper was back to his usual happy self. Cue another developmental milestone. Kasper found his nose!
DSC_0435

All of a sudden, he couldn't keep his fingers off his nose. It was hilarious! He would be cross-eyed looking at his fingers and would touch and feel the nose. I think he's getting his pincer grip because since he found his nose, he likes to feel his lips and chin and tounge, etc. So funny.

Then Lois allowed Kasper to be near her and even touch her a couple times.

So tomorrow Kasper starts at daycare. I know he'll be fine and I'm so glad we found a place that I am so comfortable with. I'm sure I'll be thinking about him extra hard tomorrow, but I'll get to see him at 4 so I think I can make it. Maybe I'll be too busy blowing my nose to miss him. I caught Rob's cold and it sucks.

Anyway, that was our week. I'm too sick and exhausted to write more. Think good thoughts for Kasper tomorrow! And us too.

May 4

May 4, 2010

I was coming off of a week spent home sick. On Tuesday, I decided to take a pregnancy test. It was positive. As excited as I was that day, I could have never dreamed that in one year I would have a sweet 4 month old that I love more than anything.

What a difference a year makes!

Question - when is that stomach going to come back??

Work, Day 1: Done.

I made it through my first day of work! I was so upset last week thinking about returning and leaving my little one. I cried and cried last night when I went to bed thinking about how badly I would miss my boy. Turns out the thought of leaving him was far worse than the reality. I am proud to say that I didn't shed a tear once I got to the lab. (I did cry a little leaving the driveway.) It was fun to see the people I haven't seen for 4 months! What made the return 100x easier was knowing that Kasper was home with his Papa. Someone that would give him lots of hugs and kisses all day long. Maybe next Monday will be different, but today I was ok.

Besides, how bad can your day be when this is your lunch date?

4 months

Dear Kasper,

You are 4 months old today! 17 weeks yesterday. It is now the end of the road for Kasper and Mama time. While my heart is absolutely breaking, I am so thankful that we got to spend these 4 months together. I know many people get far less time with their little ones. I have tried my best to soak up all of our remaining time together. (It's funny, I feel like I'll never see you again. Like I'm trying to say Goodbye.)

Mo1-4

You went through some big changes this month! You are becoming less of a little baby and more like a little boy. According to the Dr., these are your 4 month stats:

Weight: 14.2 lbs - 40%
Length: 25.75" - 75%
Head: 16" - 15%

You are still growing on the same length curve, but have fallen off the weight curve! The Dr. isn't concerned because you have been in the 40% for all of your weights but the last one, but I was sort of surprised to see that number! You head size is growing some, which is great but apparently your soft spot is getting small. It's not supposed to close until you're around 1 year old, so hopefully it doesn't close too soon! You need room for that brain to grow!

I would say your number one favorite thing to do these days is put anything and everything you can get your mitts on in your mouth. Including the mitts.

You will grab toys if they are in front of you, but you don't seem that interested in them for their entertainment value yet. Just one more thing to put in your mouth.

You finally got your hands on your feet this week. You've been eying them for awhile but haven't been able to get them in your grasp.

You have started playing with your ears when you are sitting quietly. Only the right ear. I think you just discovered them.
DSC_0933-1.jpg

You are working on rolling and can roll over from your tummy to your back on occasion. It's not consistent yet and I think you forget how you do it so can't repeat it. You hate tummy time a little less these days.

You are content to look around for about 10-15 minutes, then you scream to be done. You can hold your head up at it's maximum angle! You are doing a lot of rolling from your back to your side and can roll all the way around your play mat. You really enjoy sitting in your Bumbo. We have you up at the table now when we eat so you can be included.

You are also working pretty hard on your vocalizations and you talk all.the.time. You are laughing a lot now in response to things we do. You won't laugh on your own yet. One of your favorite times to giggle is when you are all swaddled up for bed or for a nap. It's pretty much the cutest. You've been chatty for months, but this month you've added screams, screeches and growls to your repertoire along with tons and tons of talking. You talk on your changing table, when you're done nursing, when you're done burping, when you're sitting, when you're laying down. You scream when you're getting tired, mad or when you're just feeling silly. Sometimes you'll stumble on a new sound or tone and repeat it over and over. It's so funny. It's so fun to watch you discover new things about yourself. Things that we adults take for granted.

You are so aware of your surroundings. You look at people as they walk into the room or around it. You watch Lois very intently. You recognize your parents and always great them with a huge smile. You are also still very social and have a smile or a giggle for anyone who says Hi. On the other hand, you are now able to watch the TV when it's on, so we try to keep it off while you're around. You continue to love your changing table although you don't smile at the wall anymore. You've always had a great variety of expressions and love to clown around whenever you can.

Now to discuss your sleep. You still sleep in your Rock and Play (RnP)sleeper and I'm having some major anxiety thinking about how we'll transition you to sleeping flat in your crib. Your reflux is better, thankfully, so you probably don't need to be inclined anymore. Also, your legs and feet stick out the end, so I think you're getting too big. It has a 25 pound weight limit so you are still ok to be in there. Ack! I don't know how we're going to make the switch. You sleep 9-10 hours a night (you've had a few bad nights this week, but I think you're growing because you eat a ton in the middle of the night) so I would hate to ruin that. I've tried to lay you flat for naps but you just wake up after a half hour and won't go back to sleep. You regularly take 2.5-3 hour naps in the RnP. I brought you into bed with me Monday to see how you'd do and you only slept 45 minutes. But aren't we cute? Maybe I'll let daycare sort that out.

You are still swaddled at night and for naps. I tried letting you sleep unswaddled and you stretched too much and couldn't fall asleep. Then I tried leaving one arm out. You ended up messing with your mouth and pulling your paci out and not being able to sleep. I think we'll try to solve one problem at a time on the sleep front.

You are so cute when you wake up. If it's been a nice nap and you are well rested, you lay quietly in bed and blow raspberries until I come and get you. You also give me a HUGE smile when I get you out of bed. It's one of my favorite things 3 times a day.
DSC_1003-1.jpg
I will still look forward to those smiles in the mornings...

With that, we end our maternity leave together. Tomorrow I return to work. Know that I've loved every day we spent together and I will miss you terribly during the day. Be a good boy with Papa and Grandma this week and after that at daycare. Life's not always fair and I'm having to learn that big time as I have to go back to work. I would give anything to continue our fun, but I know it'll be so good for you to be around other kids and it'll be good for me to continue in my career. Oh how I'll miss you.
DSC_0901-1.jpg

I love you so much my wonderful, beautiful baby. Here's to month 5. I can't wait to see what you'll learn.

Love, Mama
